Sunnis, Shi’a, Protestants, and Catholics, oh my

When discussing the Shi’a-Sunni sectarian divide in Islam, does the Catholic-Protestant analogy useful, or a barrier to understanding? Razib and Aziz continue their long-standing debate on the matter. At least, until we are interrupted by an interloper who interjects their own, unique perspective…

The original discussion on this topic was back in March 2004 – here are the relevant links:

  1. Aziz, at City of Brass – fuzzy analogies: Shi’a and Catholics
  2. Thabet, at Muslims Under Progress – On the Islamic clerisy and analogies with Christianity
  3. Razib, at Gene Expression – Here I Stand

There was also a followup discussion at Talk Islam this past May (2008).

Hopefully, our next podcast will pick up where this one left off!
